Facebook and Instagram threat charging for app usage

ios 14.5 updates for facebook and instagram on iphone

Facebook and Instagram have really thrown a spanner in the works this week with their threat to charge users for their usage of their apps moving forward if they don’t accept tracking permissions. 📱

The latest iOS update requires all apps to request permission from the user to track them from app to app. Facebook and Instagram are taking an interesting approach by suggesting users will ‘help keep Facebook/Instagram free’ if users allow ads.

Their suggestion seems as if not enough users allow ads, then that decline might result in users being charged for those apps in the future. 💰

It’s also worth noting that the app store forbids apps from providing incentives for users to allow themselves to be tracked so there’s discussion over whether these businesses are breaking the rules here or not. You can read the full article on the new tracking permissions here.
